Henry B. Crawford reloading .45-70s ammunition for his Sharps rifle by lantern light. This scene depicts a typical evening from the late 1870s. These rifles were used on buffalo until about 1883 or so. (By the way, Henry B. Crawford is my all-time favorite historian!)
